Ch. 7: Second Day of Tournament

The following morning was one of clear skies and good cheer. One week of the tournament had already passed, with more than half the competitors having been eliminated. This was the midway point of the competition, the remaining 200 ready to fight harder to beat their opponents and emerge the victor.

Among that number was Max Maple, Molly Hale, Steven Stone, Sabrina, Sakura, Ritchie, Paul, and Flint, one betrayer and seven allies. Others who had made it were A.J., Trinity, and Tyra. They would soon prove to be able recruits in the war that was coming.

And finally, deliberately coming last for unknown reasons, was Satoshi Mortis.

The second week of the tournament was scheduled to commence on Monday at 10 AM sharp. The first match was to be Satoshi Mortis against Max Maple. Max would relish this moment and get back at Satoshi for hurting his Blaziken.

Satoshi, however, no longer cared about the tournament, though he would not slack in the competition neither. He would battle long and hard. The competition was now secondary to what he had to do next. Hiding in a secret glade in the forest to the east of Viridian City, Ash sent out a clear telepathic message to his fellow friends and allies.

Everyone, he said, it is now the middle half of the tournament. The time has come for our meeting to begin. Reaching out to each mind, he projected images of where he was and how to get there.
We will convene here in this secluded glade within the forest at the stroke of nine. Come, and make sure no one follows you. And remember, come anonymously. Conceal your identities. I'll see you all here soon.

Every mind he touched understood his order, and sent acknowledgement. They would come, and they would be ready to discuss matters of the darkest nature.

It was now 9:42 AM on a sunny and clear Monday. People were excited about the match-up between Satoshi and Max. On one side, Max had risen to become a very capable competitor, having already gained the respect of many esteemed competitors that remained in the competition, including Cynthia, Koga, and Bruno, all of them esteemed Champions, Gym Leaders, and Elite Four members. Even the spectators had come to view Max with respect and admiration, the will and drive of this young 16-year old allowing him to keep pace with some of the very best.

Satoshi, on the other hand, was an enigma. Only the most famed of the competitors seemed to know who he truly was. But like everyone else, they feigned ignorance and confusion as to his real identity. Everyone else began to respect him greatly, yet he would forever remain a mystery, one never to be revealed.

Thus, the stage was set. Youth against maturity. Inexperience against experience. Fame against anonymity.

Inside the competitors' locker room, Ash was in deep meditation, preparing for the upcoming battle. He expected Max to put up more a fight than before, knowing that the boy would let his anger at his severe loss fuel his drive. Though he knew Max would be distracted by his anger, he had no doubt Max would battle more effectively, sure in the knowledge that he would've trained hard for this moment.

He also knew that Max was seeking him out, feeling his Aura approach. Right on cue, Max appeared, followed by his sister, Brock, Dawn, and Misty, who looked revitalized and cleansed after the night before.

"Max." he calmly stated.
"Satoshi." Max growled. He was angry. "I learned my lesson from our past battle."
"And what would that be?" Satoshi asked.
"To simply fight you at my best and not get distracted. That's not going to happen today. I will give it my all, and I will see to your elimination."

Satoshi stood, and prepared to leave for the arena. "Hey!" yelled May. "Don't you dare ignore my brother!"

"I will ignore him, because he's only learned part of the lesson, not the whole." he responded, without turning around.
"What have I forgotten?" Max demanded.
"You're right in that you will give it your all in this battle, but the mistake you have committed is to "see to my elimination."

"That's what I'm going to do!" he hotly replied. Satoshi just shook his head. "And that shall be your downfall. The only thing you should be focused on is yourself. Yet again you're diverting your attention to me, this time not through anger, but through devotion."

"What do you mean?" Misty asked. Satoshi turned to look at her. "Ah, Miss Waterflower. You seem refreshed."
"Enough." she said, not wanting to relieve last night, nor let her friends know what had transpired. Fortunately for her, Satoshi didn't press the matter further.
"What do you mean Max is gonna lose through devotion?" she asked again.

"I mean exactly that." Satoshi replied. "Max here is determined to see me ousted from the tournament so he's going to devote all his strength to eliminating my Pokemon directly. I can also see he has not completely absolved himself of his anger; he is still bitter about his earlier loss and the injuries inflicted upon his Blaziken. He hasn't gotten over it, and so, he will be distracted again, but by devotion this time."

His explanation ended, Satoshi headed out to the arena. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I will meet you out in the field."

He left, leaving them further aggravated.
"What a jerk." said Dawn, not liking him one bit. "That guy is weird and sadistic. I don't know how the elite competitors like him." said Brock, a look of genuine puzzlement across his face.
"They just like him 'cause of the way he trains and battles." Misty said angrily. "I'm going to have a word with them once the competition is over."
"Let it go for now, Misty." said May. "Right now, let's support Max. He's gonna kick Satoshi's ass out of here!"
Max turned to smile at his sister, glad for her support. "Thanks, big sis."

It was time. Their match was about to begin.

"This match-up is Max Maple of Petalburg City versus Satoshi Mortis of Viridian City! Each trainer is only allowed two Pokemon! Good luck, and begin!" yelled the referee. Being the latter half of the tournament, each competitor was now denied two additional Pokemon, all staying with a maximum of four Pokemon.

"Time to get you out of this tournament, Satoshi!" shouted Max as he threw a Pokeball. "Mightyena, I choose you!" From the bright light a magnificent Mightyena came out, the dog baying and ready for battle.

"Come forth, Donphan." Satoshi said as he threw out a Pokeball. The rhino-like Pokemon sprang forth.
"Mightyena, Tackle it!" Max commanded. The dog charged forward at incredible speed, intent on ramming a heavily armored Pokemon.
"Take the blow." Satoshi said, and Donphan stood its ground. Mightyena struck it hard on the side, where its armored hide was less thick. Donphan merely took the hit, but it back down.
"Now, give it a Sand Attack, then a Sucker Punch!" Max ordered. Mightyena turned its back to Donphan and began to kick lots of sand at it. Donphan just stood its ground.

Following that, Mightyena emitted a powerful Sucker Punch, which struck Donphan head-on. Still, it didn't react. Many in the stands were starting to wonder what Satoshi's plan was.

"What's Satoshi doing?" wondered Misty. "He's just letting his Donphan take blow after blow."
"I don't know, Misty. But from the looks of it, Donphan's taking the hits pretty well." answered Brock. "What do you guys think?" he asked Dawn and May, but they weren't paying attention, too busy flirting with their boyfriends.

"Shouldn't you be supporting Max, June?" Drew asked his girlfriend, deliberately misnaming her. She just giggled. "Max can take care of himself, grasshead." The two just smiled and kept on flirting.

It was the same with Kenny and Dawn. "I missed you for a while, Dee-Dee." he said. "You've been gone too long."
"Well, you know, I had to come and support my best friend's brother." she replied. "But I have missed you."
"How bout we go out tonight?" Kenny asked. "My treat."
"Oh, you're such a gentleman." she playfully responded, but agreed to the date.

"Those four are so in love with in each other." Brock said, though he already had a girlfriend, finally freeing him of his ga-ga moments and ear-pulling tortures by Misty, then Max, and then both after their reunion.

"Yeah, they are." Misty said absent-mindedly. She would never experience that young love, not as long as her oath bound her to her word.

A great yowl sounded across the stadium. Even the four lovebirds stopped their flirting to look down. Mightyena had cried out in pain after delivering yet another Tackle attack at Donphan, who looked bruised and battered yet didn't even budge.

"Mightyena!" Max cried. "You still good?" he asked. Mightyena answered with a weary but determined bark. "Good, then! Hit Donphan with a Shadow Ball barrage!"
Mightyena obeyed and spat out five balls of dark energy straight at Donphan, who just followed its master's previous order and didn't move a muscle. Everyone was stunned. Shadow Ball was a powerful attack, and five were going to hurt it badly. Max had a triumphant smile plastered on his face.

"Is Satoshi out of his mind?" asked May, her attention now turned to the battle. "Donphan can't hold against that!"
"What is Satoshi thinking?" added Misty, equally stunned at his stubbornness.

The Shadow Balls all struck Donphan sequentially, hitting it hard. A cloud of dust was kicked out, and when the smoke cleared, Donphan was still there, standing. Max was distraught and shocked. How could he survive that?

It was true; Donphan looked severely battered, yet it still stood strong. "Well done, Donphan." Satoshi. He pointed a finger at Mightyena. "Now, Rollout."

Donphan obeyed, and curled itself into a ball, charging straight for Mightyena. Mightyena was able to barely dodge it, though it wasn't enough; Donphan grazed the dog Pokemon, causing it to fall down, hurt.

"Mightyena!" cried Max. Satoshi ordered Donphan out of its Rollout maneuver. "Now, Donphan run in circles around Mightyena. Rapid Hyper Beam attack, from all sides!"

"What?" asked an incredulous Max. "That's not a real move!"
"Did I ever mention I created my own attacks?" replied Satoshi. "Do it, NOW!"

Donphan obeyed and ran like hell, making circles around Mightyena. Max, not willing to take any chances, ordered Mightyena to run around too. But it was too late. From Donphan's mouth came not one, but a series of successive Hyper Beam attacks one right after the other.

Mightyena was caught in its sights. All the Hyper Beams struck it head-on, the last blasting him back to Max. Everyone in the stands gave out a collective gasp; no one had ever seen a move like that!

"Mightyena is unable to battle! The round goes to Satoshi Mortis!" cried the referee.

Max recalled his Pokemon, in shock at the new attack he just witnessed. "How-?" he began to ask. "I discovered the ability to control my Pokemon's energy levels a while back. When I trained my Pokemon how to control their energy levels, I found I could manipulate the damage each attack could make. You saw this with my Hyper Beam. Instead of one large beam, I trained my Donphan to control its power into less-powerful but more damaging beams." explained Satoshi.

Max would still not back down and he brought out a second Pokeball. "Mismagius, your turn!" he commanded, and the Ghost-type emerged.

Satoshi flinched only in the slightest. A Mismagius was a powerful Ghost-type, so he had to be careful. "Donphan, watch yourself." he told his Ground-type.

"Mismagius, Hidden Power!" Max called. A white nimbus formed around the Ghost-type; Satoshi was on guard, he had no idea what would occur.
The energy gathered, Mismagius blasted it as a powerful beam straight at Donphan. The Ground-type, caught unawares, was struck full force and fell back. It tried to get up, but couldn't; it collapsed onto the ground.

"Donphan is unable to battle!" called the referee. "The round goes to Max Maple!"

"Woo! That's my brother!" cried May from the stands, the others also cheering him for his win. Max looked up and waved over to them, glad to have their support.
Satoshi, on the other hand, was silent. The boy is a fool. He only got an easy victory. He looked at his Pikachu, who stood behind him. It's your turn, my friend.

Pikachu nodded and sprinted forward. "Begin!" called the referee.

"Mismagius, Shadow Ball!" yelled Max, and the Ghost-type fired an energy ball straight at Pikachu. "Dodge it." Satoshi commanded. Pikachu easily got out of the ball's path.

"Hit him again, Mismagius! Don't give it an opening! Shadow Ball again, then Torment!" Mismagius fired another Shadow Ball, which missed, then stared straight at Pikachu, tormenting it into making a rash move. But Pikachu held his ground, and instead reflected the attack right back at Mismagius!

"What?" said Max as he saw Mismagius writhe around in confusion.
"You have it now, Pikachu." Satoshi said. "A Thunderbolt." Pikachu charged forward and fired a powerful bolt, which struck Mismagius while in its confusion.

"Mismagius!" cried Max. "Get away from there!" His Pokemon could barely register his command and moved away. Max breathed a sigh of relief. "All right, then! Psychic! Keep him immobile!" Mismagius obeyed and its eyes glowed. Soon Pikachu was unable to move.

"Yeah, that's the way!" shouted May, glad to see her brother kicking the shit out of Satoshi. The others were also cheering for Satoshi's demise, but none noticed that Drew and Kenny weren't joining in the adulation.

"You got him, Mismagius! Strike with Aerial Ace!" Max had trained Mismagius well in this Flying-type attack, for it glowed with light and charged straight forward at the helpless Pikachu. Wait. said Satoshi. Pikachu secretly had enough willpower to break free of the Psychic attack, but for now it waited.

Wait.

Mismagius charged forward. Just at the last moment, Satoshi yelled, "NOW!"

Max stared open-mouthed as Pikachu's eyes glowed blue and the Psychic attack wore off. In an instant, Pikachu jumped high and landed on top of Mismagius!
"Mismagius, shake him off!" Max ordered, but it was no good; Pikachu was holding.
"Electro Ball, point blank." Satoshi ordered, and Pikachu fired an Electro Ball practically on top of Mismagius's head! The Ghost-type started to fall.

"Now, leap and perform an Iron Tail, then land and strike with Volt Tackle." Satoshi commanded. Pikachu did exactly as told, leaping off Mismagius and commencing to gather energy in his tail for the first attack. As Mismagius was falling, Pikachu sped downward, his tail glowing white. With one blow, his Iron Tail knocked Mismagius down further. Pikachu was faster, and landed safely on the ground, then charged himself. With another leap upward, he collided with Mismagius in a full-on Volt Tackle.

Mismagius fell down once more, this time for good. Max looked on, heartbroken. "No." he whispered. He was done. He had planned to oust Satoshi from the competition and proceed onward through the tournament. Instead, Satoshi had torn all that down, completely defeating him.

"Mismagius is unable to battle!" The raising of the red flag was like a death-knell for Max. "This round and the first match of the day go to Satoshi Mortis!"

The crowd started to cheer. Never before had they seen such an incredible battle that revealed new attacks and maneuvers. Everyone was cheering, except for four individuals, who just sat there in shock that Satoshi had so wholly beaten Max. Max himself was on the ground, crying for his loss, but also festering the anger he had for Satoshi.

Back in the locker room, Max was crying himself silly, his sister comforting him.
"I...thought..I...had him..." Max sniffed. "I know, Max, I know. We all wish you would've beaten him." his sister consoled him. So did the others.
"It just wasn't your time, Max." Dawn said.
"You put up a hell of a fight against him, though." added Brock, patting Max on the back.
"Even he was afraid of you, I have to say." Misty said positively. Max smiled a little, glad for her reassurance, for all their comfort.

"Afraid?" a cold voice spoke from the shadow of the far exit. Satoshi emerged. "I don't think so. I wasn't afraid of him."

"You!" Misty shouted. "Can't you leave us alone?" She pointed a finger out towards the exit. "Get out! We don't want you here!" The others had looks of agreement; they didn't want him there.
"Very well. I'll leave." he responded, and walked out before stopping again. "But I only came to tell you, Max; you battled far better than before."

"What?" asked Max, shocked that this cold soul would acknowledge him.
"You heard me. You were still blinded by your anger and desire to see me gone from the tournament, but you fought more effectively than I previously imagined. You came very close to defeating me. At the very least," he finished without turning around, "I can recognize that aspect of you. I don't respect you, but I do recognize your abilities as a Pokemon trainer. You will become a great one. Someday."
With that said, he left.

"Did he...?" said May, confused.
"He did." said Misty, equally flabbergasted.
"He thanked me." said Max, in disbelief. Before they could contemplate on had just happened, tournament security ushered them out of the locker rooms to make room for the next competitors.

A few minutes later, back at the hotel, the group was relaxing, having enjoyed a moment of respite. Drew and Kenny had said goodbye to their girlfriends, stating they had business to attend to. Right now, the five were relaxing in the lobby of the hotel, Max still smarting over his loss against Satoshi, though he now hated Satoshi less.

"I put up a good fight." he remarked. His sister nodded. "Yeah, you did, Max. But I guess it just wasn't meant to be."
He nodded, but still he felt sad.

"Hey, Max." Misty called. "We're gonna go eat. You want to join us?" Max shook no. "No, thanks. I need a few minutes alone. You guys go on, and don't worry, I'm OK."
His sister shrugged, but understood his feelings. "Whatever you say, Max." She then lightly jogged to catch up with the others who were at the hotel entrance.

For a few minutes, Max just lounged about in the lobby, thinking about the day's earlier events. He decided to go up to his hotel room to rest and relax when a black shadow moved from the corner of his eye. He turned to get a better look and saw Satoshi. He was about to holler when he noticed how stealthy and secretive Satoshi was acting.

What's he up to? And where's he going? he thought, noting that Satoshi was deliberately avoiding the public entrance of the hotel and heading for one of the side exits, one that led off to the east. Feeling something was amiss, Max got up to follow, making sure that Satoshi didn't see him.

For a good half an hour Satoshi wandered along the darkest streets of Viridian City, deliberately avoiding the main boulevards and public centers of the city. He was clad in his full attire: dark clothes, equally black cloak and hood, all of it meant to blend in with the shadows. He avoided any light source, always clinging to the dark corners of buildings, slowly but steadily making his way east.

But he wasn't alone, for Max was also tailing behind, so quick and light of foot that Satoshi didn't even hear him.

Finally, Satoshi arrived at his destination, and stood at the very center of a wide glade, well hidden within the heart of the forest. The moonlight shined from above a clearing in the trees, the stars shining overhead. Max was hidden in a bush, well concealed from prying eyes. What's he waiting for? he wondered.

His question was answered when he heard leaves rustling from all directions around Satoshi throughout the glade. Very soon, nine more individuals appeared from within the trees. All wore robes of flowing crimson with belts of white tied around their waists. A white armband was upon both their arms, but no other adornments or symbols were seen. Every one came hooded, and all wore a mask of purest black obsidian to obscure their faces. But for all their singular garb, Max could tell there were six men and three women present.

Who are they? And why are they meeting Satoshi?

Then he heard them speak, and they spoke in a language he didn't understand.

"Exspectata<span class="">, amici mei.</span>" Satoshi said in that strange language, to which they all replied, "Gratias tibi ceciderunt frater."

Max heard a lot of what they were saying, though he could understand it not. But what you hear now is the conversation translated:
"Exspectata<span class="">, amici mei.</span>" (Welcome, my friends.)- Satoshi
"Gratias tibi ceciderunt frater." (Thank you, fallen brother.)- Everyone

"Sumus convenerunt omnes?" (We are all assembled?)- Satoshi, everyone nods in assent.
"Tum primum nostri conventus. Quid novi?" (Then let our meeting begin. What news?)- Satoshi.
"
<span id="result_box" class="" lang="la">Confirmavimus et quod metu hostium rursus colligit." (We have confirmed what we feared: the enemy is gathering once again.)- First speaker.
</span><span id="result_box" class="" lang="la">"Exploratores, intra sermo parantur fortitúdinem, tirones, de apparatibus, pecunia, commeatus, et Pokemon ad confirmandos copias placuit.</span>" (Our spies within report they are gathering strength, new recruits, equipment, money, supplies, and Pokemon to strengthen their forces.)- Second speaker.

"<span id="result_box" class="" lang="la">Non est dubium<span class="">: noster</span> ignotum est inimicus massing enim bellum fuit." (There is no doubt: our unknown enemy is massing for open war.)- Third speaker.
"
</span><span id="result_box" class="" lang="la">Frater, nos vel audierunt rumores hostium infiltrators intra competition. Ipsa nostra solertissi nutrix hoc potuit invenire nuntius." (Brother, we have even heard rumors of enemy infiltrators within the competition. Our very resourceful nurse has discovered this news.)- Fourth speaker.
Satoshi turns to the fifth speaker. "
</span>Est hoc verum est?" (Is this true?)

The fifth speaker nods. "
<span id="result_box" class="" lang="la">Est. Est vel sunt operatives abscondita inter competitores. Nescio quem, etsi." (It is. There is or are operatives hidden amongst the competitors. We know not who they are, though.)- Fifth speaker.

Sixth speaker takes the floor. "
</span><span id="result_box" class="" lang="la">Moventur velocius quam nos putabant. Nos postulo nostra maturior moliturae." (They are moving faster than we thought. We need hasten our preparations.)
Seventh speaker. "
</span><span id="result_box" class="" lang="la">Capere debemus cautionem. Neque sine alacritate proelium ruunt, aut bellum erit inutilis." (We must take caution. We cannot rush headlong into battle without proper readiness, or else, this war will be for naught.)
Eighth speaker. "
</span><span id="result_box" class="" lang="la">Adsentior sororem nostram. Oportet nos calcare diligenter. Exercitui supplementum meis parata elit sed tempus. Non erit diu ante meum officio erit repertis." (I agree with our sister. We must tread carefully. My assets are ready to supply our army, but only for a time. It will not be long before my allegiance will be discovered.)

The ninth and final speaker turns as Satoshi addresses her. "
</span><span id="result_box" class="" lang="la">Scientia opus ad coercendas crystallus<span class="">?</span> Est parávit illum<span class="">, soror?" (The knowledge needed to control the crystal? Is it ready, sister?)
The ninth speaker nods in affirmation. "</span></span><span id="result_box" class="" lang="la">Etiam, cecidit frater. Notitia penes me est. Requiritur omnia crystallo." (Yes, fallen brother. The knowledge lies in my possession. All that is required is the crystal.)

Satoshi nods. "
</span>Bonum. Estis omnes praeparatur?" (Good. You are all prepared?) Nine nods of assent confirm his question.
<span id="result_box" class="" lang="la">"Ergo convenit dicere finem. Revertere et permanebo simulare ignorantiam. Sed paratus esto<span class="">.</span> Vocatio veniet." (Then I call this convene to an end. Return and continue to feign ignorance. But be ready. The call will come.)

The nine bow as they take their leave. "
</span>Vale, frater Ash<span class="">." (Farewell, Brother Ash)

Though he didn't understand anything of what was said, Max clearly understood one word. Ash. It can't be! he thinks. Before he can stop himself, he barges out of his hiding place and points an accusing finger at Satoshi.

"Who...who are you!?" he demands. The nine and Satoshi all stop, frozen. Someone had followed them. "Who are you?" he repeats his question. None answer.

I thought you weren't followed.
I wasn't!
Apparently, you were. What shall I do?
Silence him.

One of the nine approaches Max, who starts to back away. "Stay back! I wanna know who you are!" he says at Satoshi.
"How did you follow me?" Satoshi harshly asks. Max is left stuttering. "I...I..."

"He saw you leave the hotel in secret and became curious, so he followed you very stealthily." says the one in front of Max. Max is left in shock. "How did you know that?" The hooded figure taps her head. "I'm psychic. I read your thoughts."

She extends a hand toward him. "Now, sleep." Max feels a heaviness engulf him. Try as he might, he can't stay awake. In less than a second, he falls asleep.

"You really are a poor stealth specialist, Ash." said Paul, taking off his obsidian mask. The other eight remove their masks and lower their hoods as well, revealed to be Sakura, Molly, Steven, Ritchie, Drew, Kenny, Sabrina, and Gary.

"I thought for sure I wasn't followed." repeated Ash, clearly embarrassed that he had been followed.
"Well, you were." replied Sakura. "Max almost found out about our Order, and more importantly, he almost discovered your true identity!"

"Calm down, Sakura." It was Steven who spoke. "Ash didn't know he was being followed. And he was making sure he wasn't followed."
"I agree." said Ritchie, coming to the support of Ash. "I think Max was more stealthy, stealthy enough that not even Ash's senses could feel him."

"What does he know?" asked Gary to Sabrina, effectively ending the conversation of Ash's incompetence. Sabrina was scanning Max's memories.

"Everything." she replied. "Max heard our entire meeting from start to finish. Though fortunately, he didn't understand a single word of what we said, save one: Ash."

"That's not good." said Kenny, clearly worried. Drew gave him an "oh, really, you think?" look. Molly was the one who was most excited and worried. "We can't let him retain any memory of what's happened here! But how do we...."

"Molly, calm yourself." said Gary. "We have our own resident psychics here." he finished, gesturing to Sabrina and Sakura. "Hey, what about us!?" Drew interjected, a little offended. "Don't we have powers, too?"

Sakura looked at him. "You and the others only have powers of telepathy, Drew. Only Sabrina and I are endowed with telekinetic abilities, and only we can teleport. You guys can't."
"She has a point." said Kenny, getting a little of Drew's ire.

"Enough." Ash interrupted. "Max can't know a thing of what's transpired here. Sabrina, Sakura, erase his memories, starting from when he spotted me to his following to his learning of our meeting. Then teleport him back to the hotel." With that said, Ash left the glade, bound for Gary's house. The rest dispersed in separate directions. Soon it was only Sakura and Sabrina left in the forest with an unconscious Max.

"Come, let's do this." said Sakura. Sabrina nodded, and together, they pressed their palms upon Max's forehead, erasing all memories of this event. When it was done, the two teleported back to the hotel, directly inside his room. There they left him in bed, to sleep off the rest of the night.

Their task complete, the two women teleported away back to their own respective hotel rooms, leaving Max alone. Come morning, he would wake and think he had only gone to sleep, with no memory of what had transpired in that dark forest.
